PayPal acquires a cryptocurrency startup, Apple discontinues the iMac Pro and McAfee sells its enterprise business. This is your Daily Crunch for March 8, 2021.

The big story: PayPal acquires Curv

This deal will grow PayPal’s cryptocurrency team by bringing on Curv, a startup working with exchanges, brokers and over-the-counter desks to help their users store crypto assets securely and access their wallets without requiring additional hardware.

The larger company already supports the buying and selling of cryptocurrencies, and it says it plans to launch new crypto-related products in other countries and in Venmo. Calcalist was the first to report the acquisition, and it said that the deal price was between $200 and $300 million, while another source tells TechCrunch that the price was less than $200 million.

Daily Crunch - Tesla is closing its forums

Some Tesla fans aren’t ready to say goodbye to the company’s forums, Optimizely’s co-founder has a new company and an Indonesian logistics startup raises $170 million. This is your Daily Crunch for March 5, 2021.

The big story: Tesla is closing its forums

The electric car maker announced that starting on March 15, its existing forums will become read-only as it launches a new social website called the Tesla Engagement Platform. That platform functions a bit differently, since users are asked to comment on Tesla’s posts, rather than creating posts and threads of their own.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, many commenters don’t seem pleased with the decision, with one writing, “Please do not get rid of the Forums. This is not a replacement. The forums (with exception of the trolls on it) brought about informed discussion to help fellow owners with issues."

Daily Crunch - Square acquires Tidal

Thursday, March 04, 2021 • By Anthony Ha

Square buys a majority stake in Jay-Z’s Tidal, WhatsApp improves its desktop app and Hopin raises even more funding. This is your Daily Crunch for March 4, 2021.

P.S. Due to technical issues, Daily Crunch links have been working erratically for the past couple of days. We apologize for the issue — trust me, this is extremely frustrating for us, too. If the links aren’t working for you, you can try again later (or check out the version of the Daily Crunch posted on the TechCrunch website). Hopefully, the issue will be resolved soon.

The big story: Square acquires Tidal

Square announced this morning that it has purchased a majority stake in Tidal, the music streaming service founded by Jay-Z. It sounds like an odd fit at first, which Square CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged in a tweet asking, “Why would a music streaming company and a financial services company join forces?!”

His answer: “It comes down to a simple idea: finding new ways for artists to support their work. New ideas are found at the intersections, and we believe there's a compelling one between music and the economy. Making the economy work for artists is similar to what Square has done for sellers.”

Square is paying $297 million in cash and stock for the deal, which will result in Jay-Z joining Square’s board.
