The Daily Crunch 10/24/16 Note resilient, and are we on an alternate Earth where consolidation leads to competition? All that and more in The Daily Crunch for October 24, 2016. And if you're looking for something to do this Halloween, might I suggest wandering around and accumulating virtual candy. 1. Not the end for Note name? Samsung is surprising many by referencing a future "Note 8" device in language related to its ongoing recall of the Note 7. The reference likely means it won't retire the tarnished name, as many suspected. That could have to do with customers' seeming loyalty to the device, since a whole bunch of them are still floating around/getting a lot of love on Instagram. Maybe the explosive Note is the 'bad boy' of the smartphone world? 2. AT&T/Time-Warner could create MORE competition? Mark Cuban told TechCrunch that the AT&T/Time-Warner $80 billion+ mega merger could generate more, not less competition, which is counter-intuitive to the point of being probably not true. Still, the former AT&T pitchman might have a point – in bizarro world. 3. Musk tells us more about Mars SpaceX CEO Elon Musk went into more detail about his company's plans to colonize Mars in a Reddit AMA this weekend. The most interesting thing for more is his promise that they'll reveal mock-ups of the huge colonial transport ship interiors in the next year or two. These are facilities designed to be enjoyed, Musk said during his original reveal, and will include things like zero-G sports facilities. 4. Airbnb goes after New York after New York goes after Airbnb Sue and counter-sue; it's the circle of life. Airbnb is suing the city of New York regarding proposed legislation that would make it illegal to advertise accommodations that can't be rented for under 30 days, in a bid to fight back against the city's legal action against the short-term peer-to-peer vacation rental network. This is definitely not the end of this bitter fight. 5. Pokémon Goes Halloween Pokémon Go is having its first in-game event, and it's a global celebration of Halloween that increases encounter rates for certain Pokémon, and that ups the candy reward across in-game activities (trick or treat style). It'd be great if this becomes a trend, and hopefully we'll see other events that bring even more unique temporary bonuses to bring players back. 6. Facebook grows its anti-bullying initiative Facebook is helping alleviate online bullying, which is often done through its platform, with a new Safety Center and new partners for its Bullying Prevention Hub. It's hard to stamp out online bullying entirely, since users are infinitely creative, but Facebook appears to be doing more to address the issue than others like Twitter where the problems are even more pervasive. |
