Up close with Royole's foldable screen

THE DAILY CRUNCH
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19 2018 By Anthony Ha

Royole shows off a smartphone with a flexible screen, Plastiq raises funding and Facebook faces international pressure. Here's your Daily Crunch for November 19, 2018.

1. A closer look at Royole's foldable display

Founded in 2012, Royole's best-known release was a wearable cinema display. That changed last month, however, when it surprised the industry by announcing the imminent arrival of the FlexPai, a flexible screen smartphone that appears on track to beat the Samsung Galaxy X to market.

Sound crazy? Well, Brian Heater says he's held a FlexPai in his hands. Yes, he folded it, and yes, it worked.

2. Plastiq raises $27M at 2X+ value to let you pay for anything on credit

Whether you're trying to pay your rent or tuition on credit, or you have a business and want to invest in a new opportunity or get a better rate by paying vendors upfront, Plastiq can help. For a flat 2.5 percent fee, you pay Plastiq through your credit card, and it issues the proper wire transfer, check or deposit for up to $500,000 (!).

3. Now eight parliaments are demanding Zuckerberg answers for Facebook scandals

Facebook's founder is facing pressure to accept an invite from eight international parliaments, with lawmakers wanting to question him about the negative impact that his social network might be having on democratic processes globally.

4. VOI Technology, the e-scooter startup from Sweden, raises $50M led by Balderton Capital

The plan is to use the new funding to continue to expand into new European markets, with Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Portugal said to be launching "in the coming months."

5. Cities that didn't win HQ2 shouldn't be counted out

Brooks Rainwater of the National League of Cities looks at eight cities that didn't win HQ2 bids but are working to ensure that they'll be prepared to create the next tranche of high-growth startups.

6. The Criterion Collection is launching its own streaming service

This comes after a number of high-profile filmmakers have reportedly reached out to Warner Bros. executives in the hopes of saving FilmStruck, where Criterion's digital library was previously available.
