Meet Amazon's Echo Show. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, MAY 9 2017 By Anthony Ha

Amazon unveils the Echo Show, one of the best Android phones gets unlocked and Instagram enables mobile web sharing. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for May 9, 2017.

Also, I'm so freaking jealous of that #NuggsForCarter kid.

1. Amazon unveils the $230 Echo Show, with a screen for calls, shipping June 28

The Echo Show is a Wi-Fi-enabled home device with a seven-inch screen. While previous versions of the Echo have been all about asking Alexa questions and getting responses from her, this new device takes a more IRL turn: One of the main selling points is that you can use the Echo Show to make and take video calls.

This comes after an eMarketer report yesterday claimed that Amazon will account for 70 percent of the voice-controlled speaker market this year. Maybe the Echo Show will help Amazon hold onto that dominance.

2. You can now buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8 in the U.S.

We've said that the Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the best Android phones out there, and now you can buy one without going through your carrier. Unlocked pricing starts at $724.99 with 64GB of storage.

3. Grammarly raises $110 million for a better spell check

Grammarly has been quietly building a freemium grammar checker to help students, writers and people who want to make a good impression on social media or email. And yes, I totally realize that including a grammar startup in this newsletter is an invitation for any nitpickers to point out everything I'm doing wrong.

4. Instagram launches mobile web sharing to pursue global growth

In pursuit of international growth where networks are slow and data is expensive, Instagram has given its mobile website a massive upgrade that adds core features from the main app, including photo sharing and a lightweight version of the Explore tab. (There's still no posting from the desktop site, though.)

5. Alipay, China's top mobile payment service, expands to the U.S.

China's dominant mobile payment service is making its move in the U.S.. Ant Financial, the Alibaba spin-off that operates Alipay, has inked a deal with payment processor firm First Data that will allow its service to be used at point-of-sale with more than four million retail partners in the U.S.

6. 'Blade Runner 2049' is the sequel we didn't know we wanted

I'm still not convinced that Blade Runner really needed a sequel, but damn, this looks good.

7. The #NuggsForCarter kid has set the record for most retweets ever

One tweet has probably made Carter Wilkerson more famous than you will ever be, and he'll be feasting on chicken nuggets for the next year. Happy Tuesday!
