Google sees smartphone heroics in Oreo. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, AUGUST 22 2017 By Darrell Etherington

Android wants you to have a cookie... eventually. Also Blue Apron's blue streak continues and YC Demo Day is bigger than ever. That and more in The Daily Crunch for August 22, 2017.

1. Android Oreo tries to ride the eclipse to glory

Google unveiled its Android O official name and mascot basically during the eclipse, which was a bizarre choice. But they made an animation so I guess it all makes sense.

Also, there's not necessarily many flashy new features in Oreo, but it does have some stuff that users will like – provided they eventually actually get the update, which isn't necessarily going to happen for a while for most device users.

2. Blue Apron hit with multiple lawsuits

Blue Apron's dismal IPO and public stock performance has resulted in multiple class-action lawsuits for failure to disclose material information, filed on behalf of shareholders. Not trouble Blue Apron needs right now.

3. YC Demo Day 1 delivers

It's YC Demo Day, the semi-annual multi-day demo day everyone knows and loves. There were a billion companies on day 1, and there are a billion more today.

4. Ford's starting a third JV in China focused on EVs

Ford is up on news that it's going to be launching a new joint venture in China focused on electric vehicles. China wants as many of those as possible, and Ford is taking advantage to team up with China EV specialist OEM Zotye.

5. Verizon does some terrible stuff to unlimited cellular plans

Shame! Capping video quality on unlimited plans is bad, and stop calling non-unlimited plans unlimited. Carriers unsurprisingly continue to be monstrous wherever possible.

6. Uber considering joint venture on autonomy

Uber might defray the cost of its autonomous technology program through a joint venture with an automaker, per a new report. That's just one of many options being discussed after Uber rejected an outright sale of its self-driving arm proposed by an unnamed automaker.

7. Eclipse of reason

Just... ugh c'mon dude.
