| Google's biggest names don't go to Washington, Airbnb adds new business features and Snapchat introduces new Spectacles styles. Here's your Daily Crunch for September 5, 2018. 1. Google rebuked by Senate Intelligence Committee for not sending Page or Pichai to testify Alphabet's decision to decline to send its CEO Larry Page to today's Senate Intelligence Committee hearing has earned it a stinging rebuke from the committee's vice chair, Sen. Mark Warner. "I'm deeply disappointed that Google – one of the most influential digital platforms in the world – chose not to send its own top corporate leadership to engage this committee," Warner said in his opening remarks — after praising Facebook and Twitter for agreeing to send their COO and CEO respectively. 
2. Airbnb for Work is getting bigger Airbnb is adding three new features. First, businesses can use Airbnb Experiences, the part of the app or website where travelers can book tours or events for their vacations. Second, some of Airbnb homes will become available for corporate off-sites and meetings. Finally, employers can secure temporary housing for employees relocating for work. 3. Snapchat adds new styles as Spectacles V2s get used 40 percent more than V1 Snapchat isn't revealing sales numbers of version 2 of its Spectacles camera sunglasses, but at least they're not getting left in a drawer as much as the V1s. The company says V2 owners are capturing 40 percent more Snaps than people with V1s. 4. Amazon opens its largest Amazon Go convenience store yet Amazon is picking up the pace when it comes to unveiling its line of "stores of the future," today opening its second cashier-less Amazon Go convenience store in the last week. More Amazon Go locations are expected to land in other cities soon, though the company has yet to confirm any plans. 5. WSJ reports that Theranos will finally dissolve The company sent shareholders an email saying it will formally dissolve and seek to pay unsecured creditors its remaining cash in the coming months. 6. Chrome gets a new look for its 10th birthday And it's not just a new look. Chrome's Omnibox and other parts of the browser are getting updates, too. 7. Skype finally adds call recording Inexplicably (since Microsoft owns Skype), the ability is available in the latest version of the app on every platform except Windows 10. Apparently it'll be added in a few weeks. |
