Time magazine has a new owner, Path shuts down and FEMA is testing out a new "Presidential Alert". Here's your Daily Crunch for September 17, 2018. 1. Marc and Lynne Benioff will buy Time magazine from Meredith for $190M In the latest example of tech billionaires buying up a major news outlet, the Benioffs are purchasing Time. And to be clear, they're making the deal as individuals — Salesforce.com, where Marc serves as chairman and co-CEO, is not involved with the deal. Marc Benioff told the Wall Street Journal that he and his wife will not be involved in Time's daily operations or editorial decisions. 2. Mobile social network Path, once a challenger to Facebook, is closing down Path was sold to Korea's Kakao for an undisclosed sum in 2015. Now it seems that Kakao is discarding the app altogether. 3. FEMA to send its first 'Presidential Alert' in emergency messaging system test The message is supposed to be sent on Thursday at 2:18pm Eastern, and will read, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed." 4. Uber's complex relationship with diversity Megan Rose Dickey examines how Uber's approach to diversity has evolved, particularly in response to reports that COO Barney Harford made insensitive comments about women and racial minorities. 5. A new CSS-based web attack will crash and restart your iPhone Sabri Haddouche tweeted a proof-of-concept webpage with just 15 lines of code which, if visited, will crash and restart an iPhone or iPad. 6. MoviePass competitor Sinemia launches unlimited plan For a while, Sinemia was the subscription movie ticket service that didn't offer unlimited access. But in a press release tied to today's announcement, the company called its $30-a-month plan "a sustainable, reasonable model for seeing movies on an unlimited basis." 7. What's new with TechCrunch podcasts? I'm glad you asked! This week, Equity looks at crypto's latest bubble, the TechCrunch Mixtape asks "what's a 'culture fund'?" and Original Content reviews Netflix's "Insatiable." (We got some fun emails on that one.) |
