Magic Leap keeps leaping. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13 2017 By Darrell Etherington

A 'Leap' of faith for investors, Facebook's food focus and Amazon suspends its Studios head. All this and more in The Daily Crunch for October 13, 2017. Friday the 13th! SPOOKY!

1. Magic Leap is raising another $1 billion

Listen, let's just stop giving Magic Leap money, okay? At least until they debut a product. I think it's the only thing that'll motivate them to actually put something out – the bottomless well drying up.

Their demos look cool and I'd love it if it works as advertised, but another $1 billion? For something completely unproven? This is the frothiest startup since Color.

2. Facebook launches food ordering across U.S.

Facebook may be delivering fake news, but it also wants to deliver fake food. Or rather real food. There's a great joke there, I'll get it eventually.

3. Amazon Studios suspends Roy Price

Amazon Studios has suspended its head exec after allegations against him by The Man in the High Castle producer Isa Hackett resurfaced. Amazon was also facing allegations of ignoring actress Rose McGowan's claims of sexual assault perpetrated by Harvey Weinstein.

4. Uber's product lead talks tech development under new leadership

Uber's shift in culture following its many scandals isn't just about reorganization and HR – its product lead Daniel Graf is fostering a new spirit of collaboration among teams that previously mostly competed with one another to ship things.

5. Has the e-reader plateaued?

Brian thinks it has, though his article uses an image of two older model Kindles that show just how far the market has come since their introduction so I'm not sure I agree with him. Plus, the new Kindle looks terrific.

6. Baidu sets 2021 targets for mass production of autonomous vehicles

Baidu is working with China's BAIC Group automaker to put autonomous vehicles into mass production by 2021. These will be Level 4 cars capable of full self-driving. That's the second announcement of mass production plans for autonomous cars this year, following the GM/Cruise announcement last month.

7. Podcast Friday!

TechCrunch has your weekend covered – with podcasts. On Equity, that mysterious Magic Leap and its money-raising ability is a focus of discussion, and on Original Content, we cover Adam Sandler's latest Netflix movie – which is actually really, really good.
