Reciprocity... this is one of my favorite psychological triggers because it involves the act of giving - which is what inbound marketing is all about.

First let me explain what the law is...

The Law of Reciprocity goes as follows:

To give and take mutually. It's sort of like the idiom, "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours." This law explains that when someone gives you something you feel an obligation to give back ...and this obligation is what allows this law to work on websites and internet businesses. But...

Don't confuse reciprocity with rewards..

Rewarding someone for doing something for you is a slightly different concept. When the law of reciprocity is at work, there are no negotiations or contracts that obligate you to act.

Reciprocity is so strong that the person on the receiving end will feel the need to give back regardless of whether they like the person who did them a favor. Crazy? Nope. I'm sure you've experienced this for yourself at one time.

How Does Reciprocity Translate To Blog Design

The first idea that I'm going to share with you might come as a shocker.

"Your audience really doesn't care about you."

No, I don't mean that in a bad way. But the fact of the matter is, the thousands of people who visit my website every week would suddenly STOP showing up if I started talking about my cat.

No, I don't have a cat (I actually don't like cats) - but you get my point. The reason they show up is because I'm sharing something that brings value to their lives. I'm talking about something that interests them.

I'm sharing information that can benefit them, saves them time and saves them money. Yes, they might like my personality and they might say nice things like:

Hector, your advice has helped me launch my blog, you ROCK!!

The Great News...

If you're blogging, you're already half way there.

Content marketing is a great way to start building that reciprocity that will come back to you over and over again. How?

Reciprocity is about giving first without expecting anything in return. The law does the work for you. Your audience will feel the need to share your content, thank you for your posts, and buy from your affiliate links in order to fill that obligation.

This is why CopyBlogger, Smart Passive Income, Social Mouths, Think Traffic, Traffic Generation Cafe, Virtual Business Lifestyle and my site have the audiences they have. We give away content freely and let the law of reciprocity run its course.
